2023 Summer School: Biology and Society

The International Philosophy of Biology Circle held an online Summer School on Biology and Society from 8–12 August 2023, 15.00–21.00 UTC daily. The summer school was dedicated to the memory of three scholars who have made seminal contributions to this field: Stephen Jay Gould, Richard Levins, and Richard C. Lewontin. The organized courses of the Summer School were devoted to: the biology of human behavior; biotechnology and society; race, ethnicity, and biology; ecology, biodiversity, and society; and public health. These courses presented overviews of the field as well as current research. Included in these sessions were presentations directed particularly at graduate students and younger scholars. 2021 Philosophy and History of Race Workshop

The  International Philosophy of Biology Circle hosted a Philosophy and History of Race Workshop from 9–10 August 2021 online. This event was its first workshop open to the general public. In this workshop, the presentations problematized recent and ongoing attempts to redefine the categories of "race", "racism" and related terms. The presentations in this workshop addressed various facets of the historical and philosophical origins, relevance, and implications of these concepts and how they feature in contemporary debates.
